Internship - MLive.com Experience

Three months ago, I got a call from Davy McVety from MLive.com. He said that he heard that I was interested in being an intern there and asked if I still wanted to work there. I JUMPED on the opportunity and we talked on the phone for a good 30 minutes.

Now, I sit here, with my internship being over. What an experience it was. I wouldn't of traded that experience for anything. I was lucky to have Dave as my mentor, and I believe that will help me in the future on my road to finding a career. I learned what a print journalist's responsiblities are, while getting to enjoy high school football.

Going into the internship, I am not going to lie, I was real nervous. I actually never have written professionally. I never wrote for a school newspaper, for another job, or for an organization. The only experience that I had writing was in college courses.

The reason that I picked MLive as an internship possibility was for a few reasons. If any of you know me personally, I am a huge sports fanatic. I grew up on sports. My two major sports are basketball and baseball. I still remember shooting hoops out in my driveway with my brother in the winter with snow falling on us. Nothing stopped us from playing basketball, except when we would try to play nerf basketball in the living room and our mom would tell us to go play outside. Growing up, I loved watching Sportscenter with Stuart Scott. I loved listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio when my dad would have the tigers playing on the radio while he was doing yard work. I loved sitting in front of the television with my whole family watching the Pistons play with George Blaha broadcasting the play by play. I just loved everything about sports and I thought if I couldn't be a professional athlete, then what would be better than being around sports by being part of the media?

Even though journalism isn't my exact focus in my major, my brother really inspired me to write. He graduated in 2009 from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in print journalism. He wrote for the State News and had the opportunity to cover Michigan State Athletics, even the road to the final four with the basketball team. I always looked up to my brother, but I decided that I wanted to go on my own route and that is why I chose telecommunications and public relations.

Once again, when I got the chance to take an internship with MLive.com, my brother told me to JUMP ALL OVER IT. Boy, am I glad I did.

Since I know a lot about football, I believe I had an advantage over the other interns. I know I needed a lot of work on my writing and I believe it has vastly improved over these last three months.

Probably my best experience while being an intern at MLive, was when I got the opportunity to cover the Brother Rice @ Catholic Central game. Since I graduated from CC in '08, I was very anxious to return to my Alma Mater. The best part about it was that CC was playing against their biggest rival and it is known as the biggest rivalry in the state of Michigan. The cheering section was hyped up and the Shamrocks came away with the win, 21-19. Here is the link to my story for that game: http://highschoolsports.mlive.com/news/article/-8246662925894989717/detroit-catholic-central-comes-out-with-21-19-victory-over-birmingham-brother-rice-in-a-catholic-central-division-football-rivalry-thriller/

I got to cover the Division 1 State Title game with Catholic Central vs. Detroit Cass Tech. Disappointingly, CC got smothered by the Cass Tech defense and lost in a blow out. However, CC handled the loss with class and will recover next year. I am pretty
sure that I was the only media member that wanted CC to win. It is tough to watch, but a great experience nonetheless. It was fun to experience how the media is treated at many events like Ford Field with free beverages and food. I also got to cover the Division
3 State Title game where Orchard Lake St. Mary's won in a blowout. Surprisingly, every state title game ended in a blow out.

Overall, I had a lot of fun during my 3-month internship and learned a lot about writing and am looking forward to taking what I learned into the future with me!
